| If you're an experienced web
developer, or a gun ho programmer, you might laugh at this.
Infact, you might even scoff at the idea. But seriously, have
a read, this is quite interesting.
I dont know about you, but whenever I meet with a potential
cients to discuss their website needs, I'm always asked the
same question. Over and over, every time, without fail.
And that question is ....."How much will this cost..?"
Dont you just hate that question?
I know when I first started out, I used to get really annoyed
when I was asked that. For the simple fact that in most cases
Id only been sitting with the client about 10 minutes and
had barely had a chance to go over the project requirements,
and really assess the amount of time, work and effort involved.
Now I guess you're probably wondering, "yeah but what's
this got to do with making money from wordpress...?"
Alright alright, this is going somewhere, trust me.
Anyone in the web industry knows all about wordpress, right?
It's nothing more than a basic content management system.
A website platform for dummies if you like. You just plug
it in and go. No messing about with code, no fussing over
layout or design, you just upload, configure and go. Right?
Okay, sure you can customize it and install
add ons and all the other bells and whistles, but my point
is this.
Wordpress allows you to provide a very user friendly,
flexible and immediate website solution that you can provide
to your clients at almost no cost, and in no time.
But hang on, you can't charge $10,000 for a simple wordpress
plugin!
I knew you'd ask that, and I'm glad you did. Here's the catch.
You provide your clients with an extremely low cost website
solution, but offer them an invaluable marketing service that
will enhance their business and help them achieve a higher
level of online success.
So when a client pops the question, "how
much will this cost...?" You can reply with, "Well
I see two options here, a fully customized site design, which
could cost somewhere around $20,000, or we could offer you
a very inexpensive solution around $1,500 tied in with our
marketing program."
When you basically put it to the client like this, and say
"$20,000 or $1,500 for a plugin, chances are, its going
to be a no brainer. Infact if you wanted to really push the
sale, you'd offer the website for free - just to get the client
onboard.
Okay, cut the crap, what's your point? $1,500 is nothing.
Ok, hear me out here.
Just recently I spoke with an established ex web developer,
who has moved away from doing web "design" as such,
and now focuses on web "marketing". He offers search
engine optimization strategies for local businesses in his
area, all based around wordpress templates, and he
charges them $1,000 a month -- PER MONTH, for a minimum 12
month contract!
Think about it. Lets say you have 20 local businesses locked
into your SEO marketing program. That's $20,000 a month! Just
for doing some keyword research, and wordpress optimisation.
No slugging away with custom code, and late nights programming.
Just market research and article submissions based on certain
keywords targeted to the businesses audience.
The result is that they get more targeted traffic, make more
sales and you have less work to worry about.
Its a win win situation. Your client has a site that is dirt
cheap, looks great and feels confident that they are generating
more sales due to strategic SEO methods.
Best of luck to you,
John
