The old adage of “fail to plan, plan to
fail” applies especially to businesses. You cannot hope
to create a successful business of any sort without formulating
a plan. If you are thinking of setting up a web design business,
then you should know how to write a web design business plan.
Why write a web design business plan?
Having a web design business plan allows you to map out how
you envisage your business taking shape. Among other things,
you will identify what skill-set you possess and which types
of client you think will most require your services.
It will also be essential if you need to seek financing at
any point. Whilst this may seem unnecessary for a web design
business that does not need business premises or stock bought
in, you will have some expenses and there may be times when
your workload is not sufficient to pay the bills. If you don’t
know how to write a web design business plan, you will struggle
to find financial backing. Lenders will want to see that your
business is well thought-out or they may believe your current
cash-flow problems are down to your business simply not being
viable.
A price list is not a business plan
Make sure you are not fooled into thinking that having a
price list equates to having a business plan. Do not think
that your great pricing structure and exquisite skill-set
are enough to see you through. Sometimes, the most successful
business is the best organized, not the most competent. If
you know how to write a web design business plan, you will
have a foundation for your business that you can come back
to if times are difficult.
A business plan can be checked at regular intervals to make
sure you are following the route you have set for yourself,
or to identify where certain elements of it may not be working
well enough. It is like a road-map, without which you can
have little clue why you are of course, how far off-course
you are, or what to do to get back on course.
What makes up a successful web design business plan?
Whatever else may spring to mind when you’re thinking
how to write a web design business plan, there are two elements
that must be in there: your business description and your
business finances.
• Business Description – This
will include decisions on how niche you want to go, if at
all; who your target market is; how your competition stacks
up; how you can rise above the crowd, etc.
• Business Finances – This
is a breakdown of your projected income and expenditure.
This should include your break-even amount; your ideal salary;
taxes and expenses; and your billable hours, i.e. the portion
of each week you intend to devote to your business.
Remember that the best way to deal with how to write a web
design business plan is to just get on with it. This cannot
be something you vaguely consider once your business is up
and running. In fact, your business is more likely to remain
down and crawling without a well-formulated business plan.
Best of luck to you.
